Although there might not be a single agreed-upon definition for a streetband, they have characteristics in common. Streetbands:
- tend to be mobile ("ambulatory")
- use instruments that can be simultaneously carried and played
- use little or no electronic amplification
Street bands may be found at festivals, rallies, protests, and other community events.
Some streetbands also identify as "activist marching bands" or "radical marching bands."
Streebands often participate in street band festivals such as Honk Fest!.
